Alex the African Grey Parrot

Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, bought Alex in 1977 from a pet store located on the Northwest Side. She began an investigation lasting 30 years that would change our perception of avian intelligence. Her work with him challenged the notion that birds only mimic human speech without any understanding of the meaning.

This was a novel approach, as it is typically the case that pet parrots get taught words to be fun only. When the owners say a particular word but they don't actually mean what they are saying. However, with Alex who spoke the word he was using, he truly meant what he said.

Some scientists argue that it is not fair to compare Alex to humans in terms of intelligence. They pointed out that although Alex could communicate, he wasn't proficient in using logic expressions such as "if x then y."
