A robot vacuum can keep floors clean enough to reduce the frequency with which you'll need to manually vacuum. Find one that has excellent navigation, is able to clean corners and stairs and also has a large dust bin that requires emptying only every few times.

You can also find models that can mop and charge themselves, a feature that may be beneficial for those with pets or kids. Many of the best performers in our tests have excellent obstacles to avoid.

1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO and its sibling the i3 EVO, are identical robots that differ only in that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. This makes the i3+ an excellent choice for people who want an entirely automated, hands-free cleaning experience but don't mind taking the time to empty their robot's trash bin when it fills up.

Both robots are adept in removing dirt and dust particles on floors and carpets, and they can easily maneuver around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software makes a smart maps of your home that assist the i3+ to navigate and clean up efficiently. The i3+ doesn't have obstacle avoidance capabilities like the i7+ or other top-rated robots that we tested. It may be stuck on power cords and socks and have trouble moving between surfaces, such as carpet and hardwood.

iRobot suggests that you clear areas in which the i3+ EVO will vacuum before you use it, which includes clearing out any toys or clutter it may come across. It is also recommended to keep the filters and dust bin free of dirt to prevent them from getting blocked. When the i3+ EVO’s internal bin is empty or the battery is not fully charged, it returns to the docking station and automatically empties the dirt into the station’s external dustbin. It then continues cleaning from where it left off. The i3+ EVO's battery lasts for about an hour and a half continuous use, and it takes about three hours to recharge.

2. iRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot i7+ is an excellent model from iRobot's flagship line and is packed with the latest technology. It's self-charging and self-navigating. However, the most important feature is the self-emptying bin. This will eliminate the need for routine maintenance.

The Roomba I7+ can better map rooms with Imprint Smart Mapping. It also works with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning tasks and control your robot using voice or via the app.

In our tests, the i7+ was quicker and more maneuverable than our runner-up and the eufy RoboVac G30, and it removed large chunks of pet hair from all surface types, including carpeting. The biggest advantage over the Eufy is the self-emptying bin that eliminates the main sources of maintenance and reduces the cost of maintenance.

We were also impressed with the i7+'s compatibility with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant AI services. We utilized these services to instruct the robot on how to begin, stop, or pause cleaning sessions, as well as to move around the room and even vacuum a specific area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. Once connected, to speak commands to the i7+ such as "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home App also offers options to manage i7+ settings and evaluating the performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world of vacuums with cords that look like minivans or buses, this small Dyson model is a sports car. It's powerful enough to replace a traditional stand-up vacuum in a majority of homes, but also small enough to fit on the bookcase or coffee table.

The V10 is powered by a 7-cell, high-energy lithium-ion battery that can provide continuous, non-fading power for 60 minutes. The advanced whole-machine filter system is able to trap allergens and then lets cleaner air into your home. The specially designed head utilizes stiff nylon bristles to drive deep into carpets, and then pick up large particles or fine dust. It has three suction modes that can be adjusted to the specific task. It swiftly switches from handheld to floor vacuum robot, and then back to floor.

This model also has an accessory dock that can charge to 100% in 3.5 hours, and gives users an easy access to two attachments as well as a wand clip. This is a significant improvement over earlier Dysons models, which require a lengthy charge and are a pain to store.

The main issue with the V10 is its limited running time. As CR's tests show, its claims to run up to 60 minutes are a bit misleading. This is a typical and not a remarkable time for an electric cordless remote vacuum cleaner powered by batteries. That's still enough run time to vacuum the majority of a typical-sized home but not long enough to get every single spot (though a second run-through usually will suffice). This model has its own advantages however: it's light and more maneuverable than older Dysons cordless models, and its vacuuming ability is noticeable superior on low-pile floor carpet.

4. iRobot Roomba 694"

The 694 is a basic robotic vacuum that's a great choice for those who don't have lots of money to spend on a robot. It was able to pick up the majority of types of debris in our testing and often went over the same area many times to ensure a thorough clean. The flat front of the unit allows it to reach into corners and along the edges of walls, which is a nice touch.

Its smart navigation system uses iAdapt to avoid obstacles and navigate around your home, but it's not equipped with the ability to map that comes with more sophisticated models such as our top picks, the i3+ EVO and j7+ series. It may get stuck on cords for phones or furniture that is low and will often run out of power before returning to its base.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways over the Roomba 694 because it has less parts that require regular cleaning, is equipped with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtering system, incurs lower recurring cost and has more advanced automation capabilities and is better able to navigate its own. It also has a larger dustbin and is charged faster.

The sleek RoboVac X8 has a superior battery life than the Roomba. It also has physical boundaries and can be controlled by your smartphone's voice assistance. It also feels more sturdy, has a more powerful motor, and is able to perform better on bare floors and carpets with a low pile, as well as providing a wider array of automation options.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a well-known brand in home electronics. In our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors. It removed 86% of dog hair (on carpet). It didn't do very well in avoiding taller items such as cords or socks. This was disappointing. It's also a bit more expensive than some of the other models we tested and could be a deal-breaker for some buyers.

The smart vacuum comes with an onboard camera that can be accessed via the app. You can also set up a live streaming from the robot's cleaning station. This feature allows you to monitor your children or pets when you are away. The dustbin and filter can be washed to make cleanup quick and easy. The Jet Bot AI+ comes with a self-emptying clean station, which helps keep the robot's bin clear and optimizes suction power.

6. Black & Decker Robot Vacuum

In contrast to other robotic vacuums that are specifically designed for carpets and hard floors, Black and Decker robots are designed specifically for hard floors. They come with a wide cleaning path and an extra-large dust bin that can hold 2X more debris than the competition to keep the cleaning area clear for maximum runtime. Plus, they include two side sweepers that clean around edges and corners. The POWERSERIES Extreme model also comes with AutoSense technology, which detects whether it's picking up dirt on surfaces or embedded dirt and then automatically adjusts the power level. It also has a smart app that lets you see the virtual map, and control the functions and schedules. You can also monitor the status of the vacuum and connect it to the dock for charging with the click of a button. The app lets you modify the LEDs on the top of the vacuum so that you can tell where it is focused or if it has gotten stuck.

The app also makes it easy to steer the robot manually if needed. My living room rug, for example is darkly colored that can trip up some other robots. However the HRV 425BL continued to move across the border, without registering it as an incline. The ability to set up weekly cleaning schedules is a great time-saving convenience.
